In rural, Downeast Maine, we tend to hang our mailboxes from poles rather than mount them on posts near the road. This is because of heavy snow buildup during the “Wintah” months (which is most of the year) and this practice helps to avoid having the mailbox taken out by snowplows.

Many people from “away,” assume we don’t get much snow because we’re right on the Maine seacoast, but they are wrong. In this video, I am relocating and installing a new pole to re-hang our mailbox because the old pole is thoroughly rotted, as is the support post.
